I have said earlier that I believe liposomal glutathione works for mercury detox. There is a study that shows liposomal glutathione is indeed absorbed by the body intact instead of being broken down into its constituent amino acids. The wrapping of the glutathione antioxidant into balls of fat to protect it from stomach acids and to absorb it. See results below. Setria is a brand of liposomal glutathione and is in the Code Age one I have per the label.
A study involving Setria® oral glutathione supplementation was published in the European Journal of Nutrition (Richie JP, Nichenametla S, Neidig W, et al. European Journal of Nutrition. 2015;54(2):251-263.) . This long-term, randomized, placebo-controlled trial featured 54 healthy, non-smoking adults who received 250 mg or 1,000 mg of reduced glutathione daily for six months. Glutathione levels were tested in whole blood, plasma, erythrocytes, lymphocytes, and exfoliated buccal mucosal cells (mouth skin cells) at baseline and after one, three, and six months. At three and six months, glutathione levels increased significantly in whole blood and erythrocytes at both dosages. At the end of the study, 250 mg of glutathione increased levels in whole blood by 17% and in erythrocytes by 29%. At the 1,000 mg dose, whole blood glutathione levels were increased by 31%, 35% in erythrocytes and 250% in buccal cells. Also in the 1,000 mg group, natural killer cell activity increased by more than two-fold from baseline at three months.
“The research on absorbability thus far with Setria® is indisputable,” said Geo Espinosa, ND, LAc, when asked to comment on the study. “And it is backed by one of the most respected glutathione scientists in the country—John Richie, PhD, from Penn State University.
“We now know that defects in metabolic pathways required for endogenous glutathione synthesis may limit the efficacy of using precursor molecules and foods to boost glutathione levels.” Results of the 2015 human clinical trial confirming absorption of oral glutathione now offers clinicians a new and effective approach to increasing glutathione levels.
So there you have it. The stuff is absorbed. Once in the body the sulfur containing glutathione molecules can hunt down mercury you may have in the body and brain. Can it get it all out? I guess it depends on how tightly it is bound and access. Don’t overdo the doses. My method is to also use whey protein/weight lifter protein the next day to add in extra sulfur containing amino acids in high doses to help with clean up and detox should you mobilize mercury.
Here is the rest of the previous post on the topic
After some experimentation with various compounds I’ve come to the conclusion that liposomal glutathione is a good mercury detoxifier to use. Here is why
- Much higher doses of active ingredient possible than with cilantro (250 mg per capsule versus 1 mg)
- Relatively low cost at $40 for 60, 250 mg capsules
- Safe product
- Fastest detoxification
- Easier to consume pills than eat raw leaves
Mercury half life in the brain is very long without active removal
I have also come to the conclusion that the half life statistics of mercury in the brain are on the higher end of the range. Some people say that the half life is few years and some say it is on the order of 20 years. I am leaning more to the range to say the half life more than 20 years, meaning most will not come out by itself from the brain. We see this in the autopsy studies from Norway where people have mercury for their whole lives. The only way to get it out is to pull it out or wait until you are 80 at which point you will be too old to enjoy life much anyways. We want it out now.
So it is important to avoid mercury input (amalgam dental fillings, long lived fish etc.) and remove it for optimal mental functioning and to reduce the chances to Alzheimer’s disease. Sure there is no direct proven link yet but mercury causes oxidative damage in the brain and Alzheimer’s is really just a fancy word for brain damage in old people. Make sense? I don’t intend to be one those old people lost at the shopping mall and neither should you.
Let’s start by learning what this compound is and why it works. This repeats another post but I want to emphasize the point. BTW I don’t care which brand you use as long as it is liposomal not regular. The one I use consists of white powder in capsules. (Code Age is good one for example available in my store but I am sure there are many other good makers on the market based on perusing google). Find the best one for you and available to you.
Glutathione is major antioxidant
Glutathione is a very important sulfur containing antioxidant. Recall mercury loves to bind with sulfur compounds. Glutathione works together with vitamin C and E to fight free radicals and detoxify mercury. Your body’s cells and liver make it from the sulfur containing amino acid cysteine found in meat, fish, chicken, yogurt, milk, cheese, whey protein, broccoli and avocado. So if you provide sulfur amino acid as raw material your body can produce it. Good. In theory. Maybe.
However glutathione stores can become depleted due to
- Low vitamin C levels
- Too many free radicals, toxins or heavy metals overwhelming production ability
- Old age. As we age the body’s cells produce less glutathione
So the production can be slower than we need. Then damages and heavy metals start to build up in the cells, especially the nerve cells. Keep in mind mercury binds to enzymes including ones that make glutathione. So not only does it use up glutathione in the cells itself it can also block the enzymes used to make it worsening symptoms. This is a downward spiral of mercury toxicity. We are going to try to reverse that spiral and kick start the cells’ own detox systems. You can help increase glutathione levels by doing the following.
- Provide raw materials by eating cysteine rich proteins like whey protein, yogurt, meat. Those mega man whey protein shakes body builders drink are a good source of cysteine. It even shows the amino acid content on the label.
- Provide glutathione precursors like N-acetylcysteine. I have no idea where to buy this. They give this in case of Tylenol /acetaminophen overdose as it replenishes glutathione as it is the closest precursor.
- Take glutathione supplements. However this is not as easy as it seems. If you buy glutathione pills it just gets broken down into the constituent amino acids via your stomach acids. In that case you might as well just eat steak or drink a mega man whey protein shake. It will taste better and you will get way more raw materials for the money. Not good. Now if there only was a way to get it past the stomach somehow. Hmm.
You can indeed find a way to get glutathione into the body without it breaking down in the stomach
Now doctors will use intravenous glutathione but you don’t have access to that. However you have access to the next best thing.
That thing is liposomal glutathione. A liposome is a tiny ball of fat with something inside it. The fat protects what is inside the ball from the stomach acids. The liposome gets absorbed by the gut along with its precious cargo. Once in the bloodstream or the cell itself the liposome breaks open and releases the cargo. In this case that cargo is glutathione but it could be any drug. This is a novel and new drug delivery method.
Can I get liposomal glutathione? Yes. However it is not cheap. Plan about 40 dollars per 60 capsules. It also is not allowed to be sold in all countries. It is available though as people use it for skin lightening and as a general antioxidant. Taken with vitamin C it can help prevent melanin formation via blocking an enzyme. You can get great skin (really). But we don’t care about that as we want to remove mercury.
How should I take liposomal glutathione?
- Take it with liquids or with food during meals for absorption ideally something greasy like a piece of cheese so that it gets absorbed with the other fats. A piece of cheese and pills work well for me.
- Drink plenty of fluids
- For a dose start with 500 mg per day. You can boost this up to 1000 every few days. Take rest days.
- Take it with vitamin C after a few hours or next day. They work together
- Take vitamin E also as a fat soluble antioxidant a few hours later or next day
- Eat plenty of fiber to flush out the toxin from the bowels
- Take DHA fish oil that is molecularly distilled next day to rebuild brain
Liposomal glutathione does work. I have taken it. It seems to work clean out the peripheral nerves in the body like the nose, face, throat and neck ie places most exposed to mercury vapor and in saliva from fillings as you breathe it. These are sensory neurons that get doused in mercury. You can tell because you will feel more the cold of the water, the texture of the food etc. I am sure it also cleans out the kidneys, liver, lungs too but this you cannot feel that. For cleaning out the body it works well.
How much gets into the brain I don’t know. It does seem to also work in this realm once the body has been cleaned. You can tell this by the fact it will bring out retained memories and you will think more clearly and faster. I didn’t initially think glutathione could penetrate the brain but the liposome carrier seems to be able to do so with the glutathione inside. Once inside the nerve cell it can release the glutathione and let it get to work.
The Mechanism and How it Works
As we mentioned glutathione is one of the body’s main antioxidants. It also contains a sulfur end which is great for binding mercury. Cells actively transport glutathione in. However the real magic here is the use of a liposome. The liposome is a very small fat ball. It can be absorbed by cells and penetrate the blood brain barrier. Recall cell membranes are made of mainly fats. Fat/oil doesn’t repel fat but it does repel water as you leaned in science class.
What happens in a heavy metal situation is that cells become unable to detox themselves as the enzymes used to produce glutathione become blocked by the sulfur binding to the mercury. So what we are doing is bringing the glutathione the cells need into the cells from outside via the liposome. This starts the detox process inside the cell by binding to the mercury. Once enough has been bound up the cell can start producing its own to complete the process. The bound up glutathione is either transported outside the cell or the mercury is reduced to Hg 0 charge so that it can diffuse out as it is fat soluble. Mercury is then eventually excreted by the liver with bile into the bowels. That is why I say to eat fiber and drink plenty of fluids. Some people call this “brain fog” but I call it poorly communicating brain cells as that is more accurate. The goal is to make the brain cells communicate better.
Your body produces its own glutathione. However it may not be producing it in the places that most need it. So we are supplementing here and trying to get it into the cells and places that most need it. This not some potentially dangerous chelator like DMSA but a natural compound with a liposomal trick to help it get into the cells past the stomach. Think of it as a supercharged vitamin C with sulfur for binding mercury.
Here are some glutathione articles and ones on liposomes.
The number one thing is prevention to exposure. Do not get mercury amalgam dental fillings! The give off mercury vapor which you breathe and then some of that vapor gets oxidized and trapped in your brain.
If you have them my advice is get them changed out with some other material.
Don’t do any detox until you have removed the mercury amalgam fillings first. Removing the source is the first and most important step.
