Here is an interesting article that proves via an experiment how mercury damages the pre-frontal cortex of the brain. We knew mercury exposure from dental amalgam, polluted fish and industrial exposure did this and now here is the proof. The authors first state what we know.
“Both organic MeHg and inorganic elemental Hg are associated with cognitive impairment (15, 23–25). Inorganic Hg is known to produce erethism, or “Mad Hatter’s disease,” a neuropsychological condition associated with significant neurological deficits, including irritability, depression, apathy, and timidity. In extreme cases, affected individuals also experience delirium, personality changes, memory loss, and impaired social interactions. Organic MeHg poisoning is associated with chronic central nervous system impairment, including motor, sensory, and cognitive dysfunction (1, 15, 23, 24). Neuropsychiatric symptoms of MeHg exposure overlap those of elemental mercury, including memory impairment, mood changes, and confusion (15, 23–25). In addition, MeHg exposure has been linked with cognitive impairment and dementia (15, 26). Although it is known that MeHg targets the brain (27–29) more effectively than inorganic mercury (15, 30), little is known about the neural mechanisms that give rise to these complex neuropsychological symptoms in MeHg exposure.”
Sounds pretty bad huh? The authors then go on to perform an experiment using mouse cells to show how mercury cause neuron excitability and damage. Mice like other mammals have similar biochemistry to humans and we don’t want to experiment on humans do we?
So what does this mean for us? Well you would want to avoid mercury exposure via the following.
- Remove mercury dental amalgam fillings and do not get them under any circumstances. The long term effects are not good and the bioaccumulative impacts can lead to anxiety, mood changes, memory impairment and poor mental processing meaning lower IQ. It will make you dumber and more irrational.
- Avoid long lived fish that bioaccumate mercury. That means big fish that eat lots of little fish. No shark, swordfish, tuna, whale etc. No idea what other fish varieties there are but don’t eat fish too often and stick to ones that don’t live too long like salmon and anchovy. You can take fish oil instead for the health benefits as it is molecularly distilled and the mercury is in the fish meat attached to sulfur not the oil.
- Avoid mercury vapor or other industrial exposure. Don’t break open fluorescent lamps, smelt gold ore etc. Most probably aren’t doing this anyways. Don’t use any mercury skin products either.
- Consider detoxificaiton if you don’t have these fillings. You can use liposomal glutathione if you want. I detail how to do this in another post.
Remember the impacts may take a long time to play out. There is another article that I saw the links mercury exposure to dementia. Do you really want to end up in one of those memory care facilities popping up all over the place for the baby boomers? They cost about $10K per month. I would rather spend the money traveling and doing fun stuff when old age comes. Besides I don’t have that kind of money and you may not either. I would rather be on the beach in Italy or enjoying NYC than forgetting my own name.
Oh and why do I have a picture from Dumb and Dumber here? Because mercury exposure will damage your brain and make you dumber. Read, research, think and do the right thing for yourself. Your future self will thank you.
